About the gallery
Pieces of beautiful handcrafted metalwork have been found in Estonia for centuries, including ancient silver work and pieces made by silversmiths working in the medieval period. Professional artists working in metal, as we understand them today, were first trained at the State Institute of Applied Art (now the Estonian Academy of Arts) in 1924. So on the one hand, our tradition of working in metal has a dignified maturity that has had to live through many state regimes and the restrictions and requirements that accompanied them. On the other hand, the artists within this field constantly sought new opportunities and now fresh new talent is emerging. The desire to establish a venue for introducing our work is also new. In 1994, 46 artists working in metal formed their own private company and jewellery gallery. For ten years this operated in a small gallery on Hobusepea Street and in May 2005 moved into Joseph Kopf's former goldsmith and jewellery shop on the corner of Hobusepea and Pikk Streets. In the Soviet period this was the location of the ARS jewellery shop.

The gallery also converted the unique safe room in the original shop for use as a new exhibition space.

Today, A-Galerii offers a wide selection of work from around 60 highly qualified artists. You can find traditional jewellery techniques and materials in addition to new and contemporary treatments of materials, individual approaches to technique as well as individual styles. The showcases mostly have one-off pieces and small series, and information about the work is provided by our trained staff. Orders for special commissions are welcome and our staff can offer advice as necessary.
